Summer House

Bademli, İzmir, Turkey

1992-2002

Three houses in stone, steel and wood with similar plans have been built throughout the years. A hundred and ten meter road combines the structures situated within an olive grove. The land on the Eagean Coast was conceived as the living space itself. The houses have similar plans with outdoor access to the rooms. Climate control was achieved with insulated metal roof. The sliding doors with transparent glazing allow the boundary between the inside and outside to vanish.

“The ‘lightness’ of the buildings was the main theme of the planning and the utter depiction of my principle of architecture. First the stone road reaching out to the sea was built, in the five thousand square meter olive grove on the Aegean Coast. The trees were illuminated and the dock was constructed over the water. Than the craftsmen of Bademli Village shared their skills and friendship to build the glass and the stone houses around these. Later on, the timber house was added to complete the whole scheme. All houses are light and ephemeral; the only permanent structure is the road that leads to the sea.” Şevki Pekin
