Mosque and Environmental Planning

Gebze, Kocaeli, Turkey

2008

The mosque and it's social complex which are located on a flat land is set under a similarly designed plane. The surroundings of the platform covering and linking the prayer area, the commercial and green spaces are left clear. Similar to a guest house designed in 1985, the columns and the covers they carry, enable the creation of a novel perception of space with every move. The boundaries of the prayer, administration and education spaces are expanded towards the borders of the upper platform. Thus, as a typical example of historical mosques, the courtyard as a space of social engagement is wide open and private concurrently. The mosque and the additional buildings situated here are designed using translucent glass. The main idea behind the project is ‘Plan Libre’ by Le Corbusier, which refers to a free plan, namely, a free idea.
