Wooden Sculpture Museum

Değirmendere, Kocaeli, Turkey

2001

The gallery/museum building rests upon a big platform adjacent to a “green” park. The platform which is conceived as the extension to the building functions as exhibition space as well as a social gathering place for the community. The museum has been conceived as a sculpture itself and has been built in concrete and covered with marble mosaics- that form different city, sea and tree views.- The big glazed surfaces are achieved with the natural coloured alunimium framework. The building received national architecture price.

“Eventhough Değirmendere suffered from the devastating Kocaeli earthquake, the wooden sculpture artisanship helped the recovery of the region considerably. Even after the earthquake, international artists still gathered and worked under the old plane trees at the cafés.” Şevki Pekin

Client: Değirmendere Municipality
